History on his side
Even with a subpar week of 2.0, leader Jason Hatala
stood his ground to hold a 5-point lead with two weeks left in the pool.
Delving through the Pigskin Mania archives, we found that more often
than not, the leader with two weeks to play hangs on to win the pool,
and has won or shared the title the last five years.
Since the season was shortened to 18- and 19-week seasons for the 1995
pool, the leader with two weeks to play has won the pool 12 of 21 times.
The last time someone not leading with two weeks left won the pool was
2010 when Michael Aquino and Thomas Heleba
rallied from 2.0 and 2.5 points back, respectively, to overtake
Josh Patten.
The biggest two-week rally was in 2006 when Danny Wong
jumped from 4.0 behind the leader to win the pool by 2.5 points. Wong
scored 10.0 in the last two weeks to move from fifth place to first.
The battle for second place, which is projected to pay more than $2,000
is a logjam with four players all within 2.0 of each other. Matt
Mecca has a tentative grip on second place, 1.0 ahead of
Karl Hente and Brittany Lewis, and 2.0
ahead of Lisa Trotta.
Week 18 includes a slate of 24 bowl games starting Tuesday morning and
stretching through Monday, Jan. 2. This is also the final week of the
NFL regular season. The final week of the season will have only five
games for all players to play, the four NFL playoff games and the
College Football Playoff championship.
This and that
-
Hatala remains within striking distance of
the all-time scoring record and a chance to be the first player with
70 points. He has the highest score ever with two weeks left.
-
While we had a ton fun all season with
Mike Feder's record streak of 195 weeks without a
perfect week, he was quietly having a great year. Feder is currently
in sixth place.
-
The Founding Father with the best chance to
win the pool faltered last week and is pretty much out of the
picture. Greg Hansen, the 2000 champion,
scored 1.5 to drop from 10th place to 18th.
-
No other former champion is within striking
distance of become a two-time winner.
The Dirty
Dozen Bowl Pool is underway.
If you haven't entered, it is too late. The deadline passed with the
kick off of the St. Petersburg Bowl on Monday morning.
But you can track the fun by checking out the page and standings.
If you missed out on that one, there's always
March Mania which is PM's NCAA Tournament pool beginning in March.
We'll also be announcing a new pool after the first of the year.
