IT'S OVER! Mike Feder ends 10-year streak There was always a thought that it would happen. It had to, didn't it? Then just like that, the longest streak without a perfect week in the history of Pigskin Mania was over at 5:39 p.m., Tucson time Sunday, after more than 10 years, a total of 195 weeks worth of football season. Mike Feder made five winning picks in the same week: Panthers, Dolphins, Steelers, Titans, Falcons. It was when the Falcons finished off the Rams, 42-14, that the deed was done. Feder went 5-for-5 and celebrated on the PM Facebook Page. The Rams promptly fired their head coach Jeff Fisher in the wake of Feder's feat.
Congratulations worthy of a Nobel Prize winner poured in from all over the country. "Way to go Feder," said local and longtime player Mike Graham. "Do you believe in miracles? Yesssss!" proclaimed Charles Durrenberger from Texas. GIFs and videos were posted commemorating the event. Jim Purdy posted the last few seconds of the the U.S. Olympic Hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" as a feat comparable to the ending of the streak. But that came after Feder triggered a little drama on his own when he posted on Facebook before the last game was over. "OMG!!! Can my streak be over? I have four wins in the books with my only game remaining being the Falcons -6. FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!" he wrote. The Falcons were already blowing out the Rams at the time, but his fellow Maniacs started wondering if the PM gods would respond with a thunderbolt. "You just wagged a finger in the face of Mr. Jinx and Mr. Jinx no liky," wrote Durrenberger. One Maniac questioned whether it counts as a perfect week if the player does not play the Pigskin Special. The correct answer is yes. It only affects the payout. "Mike's been waiting a long time for this," said The Poolmaster. "This had become such a part of Mike's big personality that you almost hated to see it end. But it's done and Mike deserves huge congratulations for never giving up."
Emily Dewhirst moves into the hot seat with a streak of 164 weeks without a perfect week. She is only four weeks short of the second-longest streak in history set by Dale Collins who went the first 168 weeks of the existence of Pigskin Mania before he got his first. Dewhirst's last perfect week was in the last week of the 2007 season. She is on pace to break Feder's record in the middle of the 2018 season. After Dewhirst there's a group of five players who started playing in the 2010 season and have never had a perfect week. Their streaks are at 127 weeks. One of those five is Todd Hamm who was on the verge of ending his streak but was among 417 players who went down with the Cowboys on Sunday night. It was his only loss. Hamm wasn't happy as demonstrated by his Facebook post: "MF'n Cowboys! They ruined my perfect week attempt." Also in the top 10 streaks are two Founding Fathers, Greg Hansen and Javier Morales, who also have been waiting since 2010 for a perfect week. A wrong turnabout In Week 2, Pigskin Maniacs were faced with the same choice in the Pigskin Special that they had this week, Cowboys vs. Giants. At the time of the first meeting, the Cowboys were thought to be headed for a dismal season with quarterback Tony Romo injured and rookie Dak Prescott stepping into the fray. Of the 597 players who picked that game, 404 took the Giants and were rewarded when the Giants went to Dallas in a pick 'em game and left with a win. That was the Cowboys' last loss headed into the Week 15 Special, and they were sitting on the best record in the NFL as they faced the Giants in a Sunday night game. This time, the pool turned it around and took the Cowboys with 417 of the 610 picks on the game. And then... The Giants did it again in a hard-fought 10-7 victory to stand as the only team that has beaten the Cowboys this season. It was the 11th straight losing week in the pool, and the biggest one-week loss of the season with a net of -112.0. Time to bowl The bowl season gets underway this week with six college bowl games on the schedule. Five of the games are Saturday and there's one on Monday afternoon. In Week 17 and 18, we extend the weekly schedule to include the Tuesday and Wednesday bowl games. We will post the weekly point spreads either Monday night or early Tuesday morning both weeks to accommodate anyone who wants to start playing games on Tuesday. This is also a reminder that the Dirty Dozen Bowl Pool gets underway with games starting on Dec. 26. The Bowl Pool page will be updated about Dec. 16. There aren't any rules changes so the rules that are currently on the page apply with the exception of the games and the deadlines. Anyone can jump in on the Bowl Pool. You don't have to be a regular-season PM player to join. The entry fee is $10. |
