Perfect weeks for everyone
After being bunched up at the top last week, the gap opened again for
Jason Hatala who held the lead just two weeks ago.
Hatala managed a 5.0 with his only miss being Louisville's upset against
Kentucky. He has opened up a 3-point lead over Bonedogg
and Matt Mecca as the college season winds down and NFL
games take center stage for a few weeks.
Looking through the standings, we see that defending champion
Kylie Crosland is lurking in 207th place, just 3.5 points out
of the money.
Two-time winners Thomas Heleba and KC Nintzel
are in 362nd and 459th, respectively - or you might say disrespectively
- so it doesn't appear we're anywhere close to crowning a three-time
champ.
At the bottom, Nic Slade was making a strong bid to set
a new all-time low for a player who makes picks every week, but a 3.5
this week may keep him from the record of 20.0 held by Laura
Cape.
32,000 to 1
When Founding Father Jon
Wilner went three straight weeks without picking a winner in
the early years of Pigskin Mania, we turned to the Math Department at
the University of Arizona to figure out the odds of such a feat.
It turned out the answer was relatively simple. With two options of
equal chance to win in 15 different games, the calculation is 2 to the
15th power, or 32,767 to 1.
As it turned out, the calculation came into play again in the 2000
season when Greg DuBose became the first, and to date,
the only person to score three straight perfect weeks.
So what would the odds be that one of those two could beat those odds
again?
Well, it happened this season,
It was brought to our attention this week that DuBose accomplished the
opposite of his 2000 feat and matched Wilner with three straight
0-for-5s in Weeks 5-7. By taking the Lock and the Special each week,
DuBose was an unheard of -3.0 over those three weeks.
This and that
-
For the second time this year, we had dual
Asshanders and they both came from the Mountain West Conference.
UNLV and San Diego St. managed equally ugly upsets for a -43.5
differential in losses. It was the second Asshander of the season
for SDSU.
-
The locals finally lost faith in their
beloved Arizona Wildcats just in time to get burned. Rival Arizona
St. was the college Bandwagon pick, but the Wildcats shocked the
world by rolling the Sun Devils 56-35 by rushing for a school-record
511 yards.
-
It was a toss-up between
Washington-Colorado and Wisconsin-Penn St. for this week's
Pigskin Special. But the Pac-12
Championship is on Friday night which put us on the Big 10 title
game for the Special.
-
The last time Wisconsin was in the Big 10
championship game it set the all-time Asshander in a 59-0 loss to
Ohio St. as a 4-point favorite. This time they're favored by only 2.
-
With bowl games being announced on Sunday,
it's time to remind you that the
Dirty Dozen Bowl Pool will be up and running again in a few
weeks. Keep and eye out for it here.
