Choler is off and running, but...
While the score Phil Choler has posted after four
weeks of the pool is nearly unprecedented, it's a long way from
decisive.
Choler, in his second year in the pool, is at a sizzling 20.0 points,
only the fifth time in pool history a player has reached that plateau in
the first four weeks of the pool. Terry Peel owns the
all-time four-week record of 21.5 points, but only one of the four
previous players to get to 20.0 in the time frame finished in the top
10.
Roger Marsh got off to the same hot start last year,
but managed only 33 points the rest of the season. Sergio Cossio,
in 1998, was the only player to stay strong through the season, scoring
64 points to finish in sixth place.
Choler opened the season an amazing 12-for-12 in college picks until
Marshall couldn't cover on Saturday, and is 17-for-20 on the season. He also
is a combined 7-for-8 in the Lock and the Pigskin
Special. He leads by 2.0 points over a group of four players.
While Choler is averaging 5.0 in the first four weeks, the all-time
scoring record of 68.5 was set in 2011 with an average score of 3.81.
Below are the five players who have scored 20.0 or more in the first
four weeks of the pool, their final point totals and their final
standings.

The Cardinal and the Cardinals
For the third straight week, the top two
NFL Bandwagon picks were losers, and for
the second time, the Arizona Cardinals were among the culprits.
The Cardinals and Steelers combined for 329
losing picks, and as an added bonus, the alleged Super Bowl-contending
Steelers were the Asshander.
The Bandwagon pick in NCAA and the NFL is the
team with the most picks that is not in that week's
Pigskin Special. The Cardinals were also the
most popular pick in the 2015 season.
On the flip side of that, the Stanford Cardinal
- no S - pulled off some magic for the Bandwagon by scoring a covering
touchdown on a fumble return for a TD on the last play of the game.
Moments earlier, Stanford appeared to have forced a push in its game
against UCLA. But the Bruins attempted a Hail Mary pass on the last play
of the game, only to have its quarterback sacked leading to the fumble
return.
Here are the game highlights. If you want to
skip ahead to the last two plays they start at the 2:21 mark.
This and that
We can't help ourselves but to put
Louisville in the Pigskin Special for the
second time in three weeks. Two weeks ago, the Cardinals - there's
that mascot again - put powerhouse Florida St. in position for the
Asshander of the Year. This time, they
go to Clemson as an early 1-point favorite in a matchup of top 5
teams in the Associated Press poll.
We poked the bear and the bear poked back.
During the weekend we posted on
Twitter
and on
Facebook that Francis Shibuya had dropped in the standings just
by the fact that a new player joined the pool. Shibuya entered the
week with a season score of -2.0. But he responded with a 5.0 in
Week 4 to start the long climb back into the standings.
Jason Hatala became the
first player to score a second perfect week this season. This
week's perfecto moved him into sixth place.
Mike Feder...185 weeks.
One of the players who did end a long
streak without a perfect week was Pat O'Connor who
is in this seventh year and got his first perfecto. The streak got
to 115 weeks. There are six more players from the 2010 rookie class
still looking for their first perfect week.
The new player is Richard Rodriguez
who joined the fray complete with a full-season entry fee. The pool
is now up to 739 players. Rodriguez scored 1.0 in his first week.
The words of a maniac
The aforementioned UCLA-Stanford finish sparked
an unabated meltdown - in a good way - by one of our legion. In a series
of text messages on Saturday night, Elaine Gonzales
chronicled the finish to our entertainment. It speaks for itself.
