A Special record for Florida St. It would be an understatement to say that the Week 3 Pigskin Special had nary an ounce of the suspense of the first two Specials. Louisville manhandled Florida St. early and often to the point of dragging the Seminoles into the the dark land of the Asshander. Florida St. had company when Marshall took it on the chin against Akron. Both teams wound up with a -44.5 differential to lay early claim to Asshander of the Year. With 341 players taking Florida St., the record for most players getting an Asshander in a single week was obliterated. The old record of 171 was set in the 2013 season when the Eagles took the Asshander in an upset loss to the Vikings. With the Special and the Asshander coming in the same game, we dug deep into the PM Archives to find out how many other times we had that happen. Surprisingly, we found there have been seven previous instances, but Saturday was the first since the 2008 season. The first time it happened was in 2001, the first year that both the Special and the Asshander were in play. Tennessee was an 18-point underdog and won by 2 for a lame Asshander differential of -20. The highest point differential in the seven instances before Saturday came in 2003 when Washington St. beat Oregon, 55-16, as a 4-point underdog. Florida St. was on the other end of one of these games as a 7.5-point underdog to BYU in 2009. The Seminoles won, 54-28, for a -33.5-point differential. The other notable in the group of games was when Florida put an Asshander on Ohio St. in the BCS Championship game in the 2006 season, taking out the Buckeyes, 41-14, as 7.5-point underdogs. For a time, it looked like Louisville might give the Seminoles the All-Time Asshander currently held by Wisconsin which was a 4-point favorite in a 59-0 loss to Ohio St. in the 2014 Big Ten Championship game. But the Badgers got to keep the honor. Below is the complete list of Asshanders that came in the Pigskin Special.
This is the last time we'll say it, then everyone is on their own. Any game in which one of the teams is from FCS (1-AA) is not eligible to be picked. The easiest way to find out if your team is playing an FBS (1-A) or FCS team is to look at the Points Spreads page. If the team you want to pick is not on that page, then they either are idle or they are playing and FCS team and you cannot pick them. This week there were three picks that were disqualified because those picks were playing FCS teams. There were other picks that initially came in on FCS games, but were changed in time. We also had three players pick the same team twice, and three picks on games that had already started, leading to disqualified picks. The importance of this, aside from automatically losing a game, is that having more than two disqualified picks results in no longer being eligible for the last-place prize which requires that players make picks every week. Plus, you get the dreaded gray shade on your line in the standings. If you get a pick disqualified and don't know why, the key to the notations is at the top of the Picks page. If you want to know what causes a disqualified pick, refer to Rule No. 29 in the PM Rules. Finally, if you've made your picks and recognize an error, you can change that pick if none of your other games have started. If a game has started, then you're stuck with the error and the loss. A Giant pain in the you-know-where If they were watching, the 35 players who picked the Giants had to be hopeful then horrified at what the Giants and their first-year coach Ben McAdoo did at the end of the game. To set the scene, the Giants and Saints were tied, 13-13, with 2:54 left in the game when the Giants got the ball to try a game-winning drive. The Giants were 4.5-point favorites so a touchdown was needed to cover. With 1:32 left, quarterback Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz for a 34-yard pass to the Saints' 2-yard line. Punch it in and the Giants cover. But NOOOOOOOOO. McAdoo elected to take three knees and call three time outs then kick a short field goal as time ran out for a 16-13 win, but a Saints cover for 36 players. Everybody say it with us..."GOOD COACHES WIN. GREAT COACHES COVER." This and that
