Pool settles at 738 entries
As expected, there were some late arrivals to the party and Pigskin
Mania set another record for entries.
With 738 players in the game, the total pot is $44,280 with a projected
first-place prize of $5,321. The first-prize projection is based on the
average amount of weekly prize money over the last three years and
adjusting for the number of entries. We project to average $875
per week in perfect weeks.
We have Pigskin Maniacs representing 37 states with some of those
actually playing from out of the country, some serving our country in
the military.
With its base in Tucson, 251 entries are from Arizona with 90 from our
satellite base in the Washington, D.C./Virginia/Maryland area, 61 from
California, 40 from Colorado and 39 from Pennsylvania.
There are 145 players in the pool for the first time with another 12
rejoining the pool after missing a year or more.
All eight Founding Fathers re-upped
for their 25th year in the pool. They continue to serve as the Rules
Committee and are responsible for the integrity of the game. Insert
joke here.
There are 33 players who are in their 20th year or more.
Another 91 have been in 10 years or longer. The average tenure for all
738 players is 4.5 years.
The 2016 roster is now online where players
can look at their past performance along with career earnings.
The making of an Asshander
One of the most bizarre plays we can ever recall
led to this week's Asshander.
It was the Hail Mary and lateral by Central
Michigan that beat Oklahoma St. Only it shouldn't have. The game
officials allowed Central Michigan an untimed down with no time left on
the clock, and they used it to run a play that won the game.
But it turns out the officials were wrong in
allowing the play and Oklahoma St. should have won the game. The play
didn't affect the point-spread outcome as the Cowboys were 21-point
favorites, but it did give them an Asshander and it also flipped the
over/under.
The game officials, including the replay
officials, have all been suspended for two weeks by their respective
conferences, but the play and result stand.
If you haven't seen the play, here it is:
Nail-biter redux
For the second week in a row, the Pigskin
Special went down to the last play.
This time, a bonehead move by a Cowboys receiver
ended the suspense when he didn't get out of bounds on what turned out
to be the last play of the game. His move kept the Cowboys from having a
chance at a game-winning field goal in the pick 'em game.
There were more winners than losers with 404
players taking the Cowboys and 193 on the Giants.
We had a tough call to make on this week's
Pigskin Special choosing between Florida St.-Louisiville and Ohio
St.-Oklahoma. We took the former because both teams go into the game
unbeaten and it is a conference game. Oklahoma's loss to Houston in the
season-opener took some luster off the game.
The early line is Florida St. by 2.5. It's an
early game on Saturday, noon EDT, 9 a.m. Arizona time. So get your picks
in early if you plan to play the game.
Bad beat on the Bandwagon
Both Bandwagon picks were losers this week, but
the college Bandwagon pick, Alabama, was particularly stomach-wrenching.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide were cruising to a
win and a cover of the 29-point spread over Western Kentucky when they
fumbled the ball away at their 26-yard-line with 1:25 left in the game.
WKU scored on a 24-yard pass with 46 seconds
left for the backdoor cover sending 127 players on the Bandwagon into
the ditch.
Alabama Coach Nick Saban was way less than
pleased with his offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin after the Hilltoppers
turned the turnover into a score.
Where's The Poolmaster
If you're looking for updates to the PM website
on Saturdays, check the Arizona Wildcats football schedule. When the
Wildcats are at home, it means The Poolmaster is busy
tailgating and attending the game.
Arizona has home games this week and next. Both
are late games, Tucson time, meaning The Poolmaster heads to the game in
mid-afternoon.
We will post the picks that have come in before
leaving for the tailgate then you won't see anything new until sometime
on Sunday. So if you're one of those who submits picks late on Saturday
afternoons, don't panic if they don't show up on the site until Sunday.
And, as always, we suggest you print or screen
shot your confirmation page so you know your picks are in.
