Remembering Nixon

Updated Nov. 2

The first Nixon Low Memorial Golf Tournament brought out some Pigskin Maniacs to honor one of our Founding Fathers who passed away from cancer in May 2013.

We put together the benefit golf tournament to raise a little money for one of his causes, the fight against childhood cancer and other kids' diseases.

The tournament had a football flair to it as players were asked to play in their favorite football jerseys. We hope to plan a little earlier for next year in hopes of getting more of the PM family out to the tournament. In the meantime, we want to send thanks to Scott Wiley who pledged a donation to the cause.

And for those who wonder about such things, was it a coincidence or divine intervention that the pool entry that remains active in Nixon's name got a perfect week this week?

Maniac Larry Lucero of the Welch/Lucero team with one of Nixon’s all-time friends Crystal Kasnoff who was the primary organizer of the event.

And then that happened

• There was a lot of discussion Monday about the 101 points scored in the Saints-Giants game. The points were the third most ever scored in an NFL game. The Giants tied the most points scored by a losing team. But what went unsaid was that after all those points, players on both sides of the game needed just one more. The game ended in a push for the 58 Maniacs who played it...

• The locals weren’t too upset about the outcome of Thursday’s Arizona St.-Oregon game, but we know of 36 Maniacs who probably were when the photo below came out showing that the Ducks winning score in triple overtime should have been overturned. Had this score been negated, the Sun Devils could have covered with a field goal...

• For about five minutes at the end of the Cowboys-Seahawks game, the 84 players on the Seahawks thought they had one of the most unlikely covers when a loose ball was ruled a fumble and a Seahawks defender ran it into the end zone to apparently cover the 6-point spread. But the ruling was overturned and the Seahawks only won by 1.

Watch the clock

With daylight savings time ending, the Pigskin Mania office is now back on standard time with everyone else. So game times on the Spreads Page are only two hours different from the east coast and we are no longer on the same time as the west coast.

We had a season high of 13 picks on games that had already started or had been completed, including a handful of picks that came in on the Patriots on Saturday. The Pats played on Thursday night.

We also have only three weeks left with the requirement to pick at least two college and two NFL games. The requirement ends in Week 13, Nov. 26-30, and players can take any five games in the point spreads.
